expanding brackets
When we "expand brackets", we are rewriting an equivalent expression WITHOUT brackets and simplifying it where possible. Expanding brackets means multiplying everything inside the brackets with the term(s) outside the bracket.
practice:
factorizing
Also known as "factoring", factorizing is the process of finding factors or finding out what to multiply together to get an expression. We can say that it is the opposite of expanding brackets.
